My First Panerai Watch: The PAM 312 (3 Days Luminor)

I went to Hamburg this week to trade my DSSD for this gorgeous PAM 312..

Since the DSSD don't fetch too good prices when they're resold, imho it was a fair even trade... I even got an extra OEM brown croc strap on top of the deal..

My good friend, Marcus, went to the AD (Wempe) with me to inspect the PAM 312 that I chose plus another 312 that the AD had ordered from another Wempe branch for me to compare with..

I want to thank Mr Peter Schweer of Wempe Hamburg for his GREAT service!

The contest opens NOW! and closes at 11:59PM Sunday December 13th, 2009 EST. Entries submitted after this time will be disqualified.

RULES OF THE CONTEST

1. All photos must be related to Longines watches. Some part of a Longines watch must be in the picture.

2. Absolutely no obscene material. Think PG-13. If you're in doubt as to the appropriateness of a picture, please PM ulackfocus or Wombat the picture & we'll be happy to advise.

3. All photos must be original and taken by the member who submits them.

4. Only basic photo-editing is allowed. This includes:

Brightness
Contrast
Light levels
Cropping
Color Adjustments (hue / Saturation)
Highlights
Cleaning of 'dust' or particles in pixels
Sharpening

All other photoshopping is prohibited. This includes filters, layers, 'cutting' of photos, mirroring, borders and any other effect or change made by a software application other then the ones specifically allowed above. Any photo deemed by the WTF Admin Team to be photoshopped beyond the basic editing documented as being allowed above will be disqualified. The decision of the Admin Team is final. If you have a question on if a PhotoShop technique would qualify as one of the above allowed techniques, please contact ulackfocus or Wombat by PM & we'll be happy to provide the answer.

4. While pictures you’ve already taken & shown can be submitted, new “never before seen” shots would be greatly appreciated.

5. Members may submit up to 5 photos which must be no larger than 800x600 / 600x800 pixel dimension size. Your photo software or picture host should have a facility to edit sizes. If you're unsure if your hosting service provides this, please use Photobucket to host your pictures. The service is free and there is an excellent image sizing feature in Photobucket. If you're in doubt of your picture size, follow these steps to determine the size:

load your photo & PM to yourself in WTF
Go to the PM you sent and with your mouse, right-click on your picture & select properties.
In the properties window, the size will be listed as 'Dimensions'. The dimensions must be 600x800 / 800x600 or smaller.

If you need assistance on re-sizing a photo, please contact an Admin, they'll be happy to help.

6. All entries must be submitted by 11:59PM Sunday, December 13th, 2009 EST. Entries submitted after this time will not be accepted.

7. Entries will be judged by the WTF members on composition, content and all manner of technical criteria.

8. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaker vote will be held. The WTF membership will vote on the tie-breaking photos to determine the winner.

If a tie results from the tie-breaker vote, the WTF Admin team will vote on the tieing pictures to determine a winner.

In the event of a tie amongst the Admins vote the WTF Owner will make the final decision. The decision of the admins is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

9. Photo's may be adjusted or changed at the discretion of the submitting member up to the submittal deadline. After the deadline, no changes will be allowed.

THE PRIZE!!!
First off, the winner will enjoy having their photo on the Longines' Masthead. That alone is worthy of chest puffing. But since a prize is nice also, how's this: a polishing kit.

To submit your photos, you must send them via Private Message (PM) to ulackfocus (Dennis) or Wombat (Craig). We'll grab the image and rehost it in one of our accounts. This will guarantee anonimity in voting.

Since it comes up so often, I want to call attention to Joel's new Orfina Porsche Design coming to him from Fred and Janice. I hope the parties don't mind me calling attention to the watch. [What's a little coveting among friends, eh?]

It is not PVD. This example has the original oxide treatment to the stainless steel case and bracelet. It is in very good shape and you can see the traditional wear pattern - thinning of the oxide layer on surfaces that rub (crown and pushers) and exposure of metal on exposed corners (I don't see much of that).

The original process is a electro-chemical bath treatment that deposits a thin oxide layer on un-masked surfaces. For steel, it is called "passivation" and can be done in multiple colors/shades, but sometimes called "anodization" (which is the same oxide treatment, but for aluminum).

One of the most rare and hardest to find 6139, this watch is in outstanding condition. It comes on it's original Seiko 5 bracelet which is in good shape but, does have light scratching on the clasp,the body and case back are in excellent condition. There is one little ding below the button push button but, not very noticeable. The crystal is in like new condition. The watch is running and keeping time but, has one issue. The minute counter hand has come off. It's a common problem with these older watches. All functions work as they should and the minute hand returns to exact zero. If purchasing to wear, a simple service can have the hand back on and have the watch working great for another 30yrs.

It dates from December 1972

Seiko SARB031 is a popular watch among Seiko fans and has been since its release in late 2007. It features conservative styling that’s a hallmark of Japan’s No. 1 watchmaker. In fact, it’s reminiscent of watches Seiko sold during its Golden Age in the mid-to-late 1960s. In many ways it reminds me of a Lord Matic.

The watch makes many nods to the past. Kohei Saito (GMT+9 interview here), moderator of the Seiko forum on Timezone, notes (here) the word “Automatic” on the dial above 6 o’clock uses a font taken from a model released in the late 1950s. The signed “S” mark on the crown also uses a font from Eisenhower-era Seiko models.

I’ve read a lot about this watch over the last three years. I’ve read about how the watch wears big on the wrist, and it does. I’ve read about the domed Hardlex crystal that is so hard to photograph, and it is. I’ve read about how the big hands are always easy to read, even in dim light, and they are.

One thing I haven’t seen anyone comment on is the cat-whisker-thin second hand. It provides a delicate contrast to the bold hour and minute hands, and compliments the word Automatic written in cursive text.

I purchased my watch from my friend Seiya (here) at SeiyaJapan.com (GMT+9 interview with Seiya here). Seiko SARB031 has a perfect 5-star rating on Seiya’s site. And that’s with 23 people reviewing the watch. It’s unusual for so many to be so completely satisfied with any watch, at any price. [Edit: Seiya says this watch reminds him of the original King Seiko.]

One blog I read said Seiko SARB031 should have been powered by a handwinding-only movement. I disagree. In the instruction booklet, Seiko calls this watch an “Automatic Mechanical.” That means it’s an auto, but also handwinds. Best of both worlds with the 6R15 caliber movement, released in 2005. The hacking second hand and 50-hour power reserve are pluses. And you gotta love those “Tokyo stripes.” [Edit: other pluses include the +25/-15 seconds per day factory adjusted specs, and the relatively rare 50m water resistant rating.]

If the mid-to-late 1960s was the first Golden Age of Seiko automatic and mechanical watches, then the mid-to-late 2000s, continuing to the present, is the second. All eras come to an end, so let’s appreciate this one today while it’s still ticking along.
